Rivers Govt Pushes Health Awareness, Lifestyle Changes

As the world marks World Health Day, residents of Rivers State have been called upon to prioritise their health and rely on scientifically proven practices to improve their well-being.

The Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Professor Justina Jombo, made the call in a broadcast to commemorate the day, stressing that health is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of individuals, families, communities, and government.

She noted that this year’s theme, “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” highlights the importance of trusting verified health information and making informed decisions. According to her, scientific advancements such as vaccines, effective medications, and public health interventions have continued to save lives globally.

Professor Jombo urged residents to rely on guidance from health professionals and credible institutions such as the World Health Organization and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, while avoiding misinformation, particularly from unverified social media sources.

She also disclosed that the state government, under the leadership of Siminalayi Fubara, has strengthened the healthcare system by employing trained health professionals across public health facilities to better serve residents.

The Permanent Secretary advised citizens to adopt healthy lifestyles, including regular handwashing, proper hygiene, balanced nutrition, routine vaccination for children, regular exercise, and periodic medical check-ups. She further warned against harmful habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and drug abuse.

Residents were also encouraged to sleep under insecticide-treated nets to prevent malaria, maintain proper sanitation, and manage stress through adequate rest and social support.

Professor Jombo emphasised that adherence to these simple but effective health guidelines would lead to healthier communities and reduce the spread of diseases.

She also commended health workers for their dedication and sacrifice, urging the public to support them in their efforts to build a healthier society.

She reminded citizens that good health is vital not just for individuals, but for families, communities, and the nation as a whole, calling on everyone to stand united in promoting better health outcomes.

World Health Day celebrations continue to underscore the message that good health is a shared responsibility, requiring commitment from individuals, communities, and governments alike.

And as the saying goes, health is wealth a reminder that taking care of one’s health today is key to a better and more secure future.
