Chimamanda Adiche And Husband Mourn Loss Of Young Son

The global literary community has been plunged into mourning following the heartbreaking announcement that renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, have lost one of their twin sons. The child, Nkanu Nnamdi, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, following what was described as a “brief illness.” He was only 21 months old.

The news was confirmed early Thursday morning via an official statement from Ms. Adichie’s communications team, signed by Omawumi Ogbe. The statement described the family as being “profoundly devastated” by the loss and appealed to the public and the media for privacy as they navigate this period of “immense grief.” No further details regarding the nature of the illness were disclosed, in keeping with the author’s long-standing commitment to protecting her children’s private lives.

Nkanu Nnamdi was one of the twin boys born to the couple in April 2024. While the author of Half of a Yellow Sun initially kept the birth of the twins private for nearly a year, she eventually opened up in early 2025 about her journey to motherhood through surrogacy. During a widely publicized appearance at the #WithChude Live event in May 2025, Adichie spoke with rare vulnerability about the decision, stating she wanted to help dismantle the stigma and shame often associated with non-traditional paths to parenthood in Nigerian society.

As the literary world and admirers the world over sends their condolences to the family’s residence in Baltimore, the focus remains on the family’s request for “grace and prayers.”
