Super Eagles to Win 2025 AFCON, Qualify for 2026 World Cup – Ekong

Super Eagles and Al-Kholood defender, William Troost-Ekong, has disclosed his ambitions to secure victory in the 2025 AFCON tournament and participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup representing Nigeria, as reported by Soccernet. The 31-year-old defender was a formidable presence in defense under Jose Peseiro during the 2023 AFCON tournament, earning the competition’s MVP award as the Super Eagles narrowly lost in the final to the host nation, Ivory Coast.

With the AFCON 2025 tournament approaching in Morocco, the one-time Greek Champion is eager to clinch a significant trophy with Nigeria before he contemplates his exit from the National team. Ekong transitioned to Al-Kholood from Greek Champions, PAOK, last season, and witnessed his team conclude the Saudi Pro League table in 9th position during his inaugural campaign.

In a discussion with the Saudi Pro League in Ar Rass, his current residence, the former FC Watford player articulated the weight of responsibility he bears as the captain of the three-time AFCON Champions. “It’s one of my greatest honors; undoubtedly the most significant honor in my career, and perhaps in life, aside from fatherhood and family life, it is something I take immense pride in.

“Naturally, this role comes with responsibility. Nigeria is a prominent football nation that generates talent on an extraordinary scale. A nation that has likely underachieved over the years, considering the wealth of talent it possesses. “I’m thoroughly enjoying all the experiences I’ve had and striving to contribute to the best of my ability, especially with the talented group of players we currently have,” the Haarlem-born Nigerian expressed in quotes shared by One Football.

“Our objective is to triumph in the upcoming AFCON and qualify for the [2026 FIFA] World Cup. We came very close last year in AFCON, and that experience has been a valuable lesson for us all, but, as I mentioned, being the captain now is something truly special.

“I dedicate myself diligently here at the club to ensure I am in peak form for selection and to continue on the path I am pursuing. “Establishing a connection with the fans is the essence of football. They’re the people that we do it for, the people that live every moment with us,” he added.
