Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyeamachi has defended Stanley Nwabali, calling on Nigerians to temper their criticism of the Chippa United goalkeeper.
In the lead-up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria faced a goalkeeping dilemma, as former first-choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho struggled due to a lack of playtime at Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia.
Subsequently, then-Super Eagles coach José Peseiro visited Port Elizabeth to observe Nwabali closely before selecting him for the Afcon tournament in Ivory Coast.
Nwabali has emerged as Nigeria’s primary goalkeeper following his impressive displays at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations; however, he has faced scrutiny in recent games due to a decline in performance that has attracted criticism from fans and analysts alike.

He was particularly criticised after allowing a late goal in the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe during a vital 2026 World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Onyeamachi commended Nwabali’s composed nature and leadership skills, noting that the Super Eagles goalkeeper emulates the playing style of Nigerian icon Vincent Enyeama.
“Nwabali is an approachable individual with whom one can easily communicate. He is aware of his responsibilities and the boundaries he should not cross; thus, he acts as a leader,” Bruno Onyeamachi stated to Football Fans Tribe.
“Nwabali has studied Enyeama and learned from his gameplay. He understands that a mistake could lead to his exclusion from the team.
“This is why he maintains communication with the defence, ensuring they comprehend his requirements and what he does not expect from them.
“At times, I come across comments regarding Nwabali and notice the criticism directed at him. Nigerians ought to be more understanding.”
Nwabali has allowed five goals in his last five matches for the Super Eagles, managing to keep only one clean sheet.
