Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Deputy National President (DNP), Abimbola Oyetunde, has urged journalists in Rivers State to unite to restore complete peace in the region.
Oyetunde, who is the first female to hold the position of Deputy National President of NUJ, made this statement during her reception by the Executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Rivers State Council.
She highlighted the importance of uniting all members as a strategy to address significant issues in the profession, particularly the problem of quackery.
The DNP took this opportunity to congratulate the new executive and commended the Rivers NUJ for including three women in their team.
She said: “ I am happy that women are at the helm of affairs in the NUJ. It shows that NUJ men are accommodating.
“I am also delighted to be here and glad there is relative peace, but there is also the need to bring everybody back on board for absolute peace to be restored”.
Oyetunde urged members to extend their full support to the executive.
The DNP who highlighted some of the programmes lined up for the celebration of NUJ @70, revealed that the Union is pursuing the accreditation of the International Institute of Journalism as a complete institution, with plans to establish an online radio station for the training of IIJ students
She promised that the present administration will make NUJ proud with the support of members
” We want to leave the Union as strong as you desire”, she declared.
Earlier, the Chairman NUJ Rivers State Council, Comrade Paul Bazia said the executive is doing all it can to ensure that peace reigns among journalists in the State.
He expressed his gratitude to the Deputy National President for the visit, noting that it demonstrates the National Secretariat’s commitment to involving all councils.
