The Super Eagles have made a slight improvement in the latest FIFA Rankings, moving up one spot to 43rd globally. However, they’ve dropped to sixth position in Africa, a significant change from their fifth-place ranking in December.
This upward movement in the global rankings comes after a challenging 2024, where the team ended the year in 44th place, their lowest ranking in six years. This was a substantial drop from their 28th-place standing at the start of 2024.
The Super Eagles’ recent performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers has contributed to their improved ranking. They secured a 2-0 win against Rwanda in Kigali and a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo, earning seven points from six games and moving up to fourth place in their qualification group.
In Africa, Morocco remains the highest-ranked team, moving up to 12th globally. Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Cote d’Ivoire make up the top five, with Nigeria now ranked sixth.
The first FIFA Rankings for 2025 are out, and there’s no change in the top 10 teams from December. Argentina is still the world’s number one team, with Spain climbing to the second spot, pushing France down. The rest of the top 10 remains the same, with England, Brazil, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, and Germany holding their positions.
Some notable movements in the rankings include Myanmar, who made a significant jump of seven places to 162nd, while Guinea-Bissau experienced the biggest drop, falling to 128th. Bosnia and Herzegovina gained the most points (+24.16), and Iraq lost the most (-29.46).
Looking ahead, Nigeria’s Super Eagles are hoping to improve their ranking with a series of friendly games lined up, including a match against Russia on June 6th. They’ll also participate in the 2025 Unity Cup in London from May 27-31, where they’re expected to play two games. The next FIFA World Rankings will be released on July 10th.
