Rivers United Beat Niger Tornadoes

Rivers United narrowed the gap with league leaders Remo Stars to eight points after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes on Match Day 28 of the Nigeria Premier Football League. The win was made all the more significant as Remo Stars suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bendel Insurance.

In a major boost to Rivers United’s title hopes, Nigerian footballer Chijioke Mbaoma has returned to the team after his two-year contract with Saudi side Al-Ittihad was terminated due to under-performance. Mbaoma’s return is expected to add depth and firepower to Rivers United’s squad as they push for the league title.

Against Niger Tornadoes, Rivers United needed a win to keep their title hopes alive, and they got just that courtesy of Samson Obi’s decisive goal nine minutes from time. The 1-0 victory marked a crucial three points for Rivers United, who now sit in second place with 46 points from 28 games.

Meanwhile, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, Bendel Insurance pulled off a major upset by defeating Remo Stars 2-1. Meyinwa Oritseweyinmi was the hero for Bendel Insurance, scoring a brace to secure the win. Arinze Anakwe scored Remo Stars’ only goal of the game, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the league leaders from slipping to their second defeat of the season.

With the win, Rivers United have closed the gap with Remo Stars to eight points, setting up a thrilling finale to the Nigeria Premier Football League season.

Rivers United technical adviser, Finidi George, acknowledged that his team’s 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes was harder than expected, largely due to the challenging weather conditions in Port Harcourt. The scorching heat and humidity made it difficult for the players to maintain their intensity throughout the game.

Finidi George praised his players for their resilience and adaptability, stating that playing at 3 pm in the sweltering heat is not an easy task. However, he encouraged his team to be prepared for more challenges in the league, emphasizing that every game from now on will be a battle.

Despite the difficulties, Finidi George expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the game, which saw Rivers United secure three crucial points to narrow the gap with league leaders Remo Stars. He attributed the win to his team’s determination and hard work, acknowledging that Niger Tornadoes were a tough opponent who had adopted different tactics from their previous encounter.

Finidi George also recognized that Niger Tornadoes had the potential to secure a point from the game, but ultimately, Rivers United’s persistence paid off. He concluded by saying, “We just have to accept the three points and move forward, knowing that every game will be a challenge, but we’re ready to fight for every point.”
