The National Coordinator of the United Mission for Rural and Urban Community Empowerment, Dr. Douglas Fabeke, along with a delegation of foreign investors, has finalized plans to launch the Smart City Project in Tai Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State. This follows the approval of the initiative by the council chairman.

The project aims to establish a smart city that will significantly cut transportation costs and reduce dependence on petrol and diesel-powered vehicles by introducing fuel-less motorcycles.

Speaking on the project, Dr. Fabeke expressed his appreciation for Matthew Dike, Executive Chairman of Tai

LGA, ‘s willingness to collaborate with his organization.

He explained that this partnership influenced the decision to establish the first automobile equipment warehouse in Tai, which is expected to create jobs, foster business growth, and generate revenue for the council.

Dr. Muhammad Mubarique, a Turkey-based entrepreneur, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that his organization is eager to support the project’s success, particularly in the agricultural sector.

“Given the collective efforts of the government, local chiefs, and the people, I am confident that this initiative will succeed.”

In response, Matthew Dike likened Fabeke to the late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, commending his commitment to the welfare and progress of his people.

He assured investors that Tai LGA is open to collaboration to fast-track development.

In a surprising remark, Dike publicly apologized to Fabeke, saying, “Fabeke, I am sorry for rigging you out of the 2023 National Assembly senatorial election.”

Dr. Fabeke and his team extended their tour to Andoni LGA, where they engaged with the local council leadership. During the visit, he praised the warm reception and outlined two key focus areas of the initiative:

Promoting a noiseless society by combating pollution through eco-friendly and innovative solutions. Introducing sustainable alternatives to alleviate the economic strain caused by high fuel costs.

Reacting to the proposal, the Executive Chairman of Andoni, Lazarus Nteogwuile—represented by Vice-Chairman (Mrs.) Henrietta Mbatumu Simeon—welcomed the investors. He expressed the council’s eagerness to partner in order to facilitate development in the region.

Our correspondent reports that discussions in Tai LGA went beyond site assessments. The delegation also inspected a proposed modern science school, and both councils witnessed the unveiling of fuel-less motorcycles.

The Smart City Project is expected to usher in a new era of economic transformation, technological innovation, and environmental sustainability in the region.
