Three Killed, Three Arrested in Renewed Cult Clash in Onne, Rivers State

At least three people have been killed, and three suspects arrested following a violent clash between rival cult groups in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Sources indicate that the violence erupted on Friday when one group launched an attack on the other, killing two individuals. In response, a reprisal attack was carried out on Saturday, escalating tensions in the community.

Among those killed was a notorious cultist known as ‘Small Lighter,’ who had reportedly been terrorizing the area for some time. The conflict triggered widespread panic, with some residents fleeing their homes as gunfire rang out across the community.

Police Confirm Deaths, Arrests in Cult Violence

Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident to journalists in Port Harcourt on Sunday, stating that law enforcement had moved swiftly to restore order.

“Yes, I can confirm the cult clash. Three persons were killed, and three suspects have been arrested,” Iringe-Koko said.

She explained that the confrontation began when ‘Small Lighter’ killed a member of a rival cult group. In retaliation, members of the opposing group hunted him down and killed him. Another individual was also killed earlier in the violence, bringing the total number of casualties to three.

“Our officers have been deployed to the area, and calm has been restored. Investigations are ongoing to track down other fleeing suspects and ensure they face justice,” she added.

Eleme LGA Chairman Vows Action Against Perpetrators

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Brian Gokpa, assured residents that security operatives were working diligently to restore normalcy and bring those responsible to justice.

“Security agencies have been deployed to Onne, and the situation is under control. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure that those behind these killings are arrested and prosecuted,” Gokpa stated.

He also urged Onne youths to remain calm and resist the urge to take the law into their own hands.

“There is no need for panic. I appeal to the youths to allow security agencies to handle the matter professionally. We must avoid further violence and ensure peace returns to our community.”
