President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State. This new university marks a significant expansion in Nigeria’s network of federal tertiary institutions and aligns with the administration’s broader vision of inclusive development.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, broke the news on his verified X handle on Monday, describing the move as a crucial step toward addressing historical injustices and promoting equitable growth across the nation. Bwala emphasized that the establishment of the university was in line with President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which prioritizes equity, inclusivity, and the prevention of regional neglect in national development projects.
“This is a testament to the administration’s commitment to righting the wrongs of the past,” Bwala stated, adding that the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni follows the recent approval of another federal university in Southern Kaduna. The dual announcements underscore President Tinubu’s determination to provide balanced educational opportunities across all regions of the country.
Bwala highlighted that the new university in Ogoni is particularly significant for a region, long grappling with environmental and socio-economic challenges. The addition of the institution is expected to enhance educational access and provide local communities with the tools to address environmental issues directly.
Reflecting on the importance of national unity, Bwala quoted President Tinubu’s belief that “there are no minority ethnicities in Nigeria,” further reinforcing the idea that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity. He also referenced the national anthem, which speaks of unity despite differences in tribe and tongue.
“Congratulations to the good people of Ogoni land,” Bwala said, expressing confidence that the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology would pave the way for new opportunities and drive positive change in the region.
