In a bid to strengthen food security and support smallholder farmers, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has distributed N150 million to 300 farmers in Emohua Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State. The initiative, aimed at bolstering agricultural production, was launched under the leadership of Chukwuemeka Woke, the agency’s Director-General.
Speaking in Isiodu, Emohua, on Monday, Woke highlighted the significance of the grant, noting it aligns with the back-to-farm initiative championed by Oluremi Tinubu, wife of Nigeria’s president. Woke emphasized that this support would play a pivotal role in empowering small-scale farmers across all 14 wards in the LGA and contribute to the country’s food security goals for 2025.
“The grant will enable local farmers to procure essential inputs, pay for land leases, and cover other crucial expenses ahead of the planting season,” Woke explained. “Our objective is to boost crop yield, particularly cassava, which will have a direct impact on food availability and cost in the state.”
The initiative has received widespread approval from local political figures. Chukwuemeka Aaron, factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, commended the federal government for its proactive approach to agricultural empowerment, urging the beneficiaries to use the funds effectively in promoting food security.
Tony Okocha, factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers, also praised the gesture, describing it as a positive step for the region. Okocha further linked the grant to President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda,’ which underscores agriculture as a key pillar of national development.
