There is tension in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, over an alleged foiled attempt to impeach the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the leader of the state house of assembly, Edison Ehie.

It was gathered that the majority of members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had concluded plans to commence impeachment proceedings against the duo on Monday, October 30, 2023.

However, the information was said to have been leaked and on getting wind of the plot, some hoodlums believed to be political thugs quickly mobilized and attacked the assembly complex by setting it on fire around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, in a bid to stop the impeachment move.

Although the identity of the arsonists and their sponsors is still unknown at the time of this report, feelers indicate that the security agencies are on top of the matter and have succeeded in maintaining some calm. Eye witness accounts reveal that it took the collective effort of men of the Rivers State Police Command and Fire Service Men to put off the fire at the assembly complex.

It was gathered that the reason for the planned but foiled impeachment would not be unconnected with political disagreements resulting from an alleged attempt by certain power blocs in the state to wield unrestrained control, dominance, and influence on certain political issues.

Over 15 security trucks and four Armoured Personnel Carriers are seen stationed at the Rivers State Assembly Complex with over 50 Federal Security personnel in a bid to restore normalcy.

A source in the government house revealed to TPCN on Monday morning that tension, suspicion, and fear are currently high within their quarters over the development.

“With the present state of things, nobody knows what will happen next. There’s a kind of fear and tension looming now and everybody’s being careful with how they talk. Suspicion is also high for now because you don’t know who to trust with confidential talks. But I believe everything will be normal again after some time,” the source said.

Rumors of the sudden sack of the Rivers Government House Camp Commander appear to lend some credence to the revelation by the source.
