Alleged assault: Court adjourns ruling on case against RSU lecturer

A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned to 29 August, the ruling on the case of alleged assault of a female student of Rivers State University by Professor David Ogbonna.

When the case came up in Court, Counsel representing the State Ministry of Justice G.U. Amana, informed the court that the Directorate of Public Prosecution’s (DPP) advice on the matter is yet to be out.

He, however, prayed the court for more time for the advise of DPP to be ready before the next adjournment and the Defence Counsel did not oppose the application.

The Presiding Magistrate, Chief Magistrate Poromon Menenen, adjourned the case to 29 August 2022 for continuation.

The Rivers State Government had taken over the prosecution of the case on July 28, 2022.

Recall that State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), PortHarcourt, had on June 28, 2022, arraigned Professor David Ogbonna a Lecturer of Rivers State University on a count charge of unlawful and indecent assault of a female student an offence punishable under section 360 of the criminal code CAP 37 Vol.11 of laws of Rivers State, Nigeria 1999.

Professor Ogbonna pleaded not guilty to the charges.
