An ex commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Godknows Ipianeh has blamed the attacks on the Abuja Kuje Correctional Centre on the country’s faulty security system.

The Kuje Medium Security Custodian Centre was on Tuesday night attacked by terrorists leading to the freeing of so many inmates as well as the killing of some persons.

Few hours after the attack, the nation’s top terrorist group, the Islamic State West African Province claimed responsibility for the jail break.

The ex security personnel told our correspondent that Nigeria is a nation where personal interest has been placed above national interest which has gravely weakened the country’s security system.

According to Ipianeh, “adequate attention has not been given to security intelligence,” adding that the nation’s intelligence unity is in dire need of expansion and advancement.

“A lot of people with past criminal records that government recruits these days into the security sector can leak security intelligence to the criminals out there.

“The country’s detention facilities do not have fortification system to deter invasion, which has given criminals the confidence of attacking custodian centres anytime they like.” he said.

The spokesman for the Nigeria Correctional Service, Umar Abubakar had confirmed that an NSCDC officer, Insp. Illyasu Abraham, three terrorists and four inmates were killed in the incident.
