The Rivers State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the killing of some worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The attackers of the church in Owo, the hometown of Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu arrived at the premises, which is less than 200 metres from the palace of the Olowo of Owo, at 12pm on Sunday when the church service was about rounding off.

The worshippers, mostly children and women, were killed in the attacks, by gunmen, who were said to have thrown an improvised explosive device before they started shooting sporadically.

Speaking with our correspondent, the state Chairman of CAN, Apostle Stanley Dimkpa described the attacks as “most barbaric and evil.

“The attacks showed how our security has deteriorated and I blame our security agencies for failing us.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari and Ondo State Governor to put all necessary measures in place to forestall a repeat of such attacks.”

The state CAN also condoled with the church and families affected in the attacks as it prayed God to comfort them and repose the souls of the slain.
