Associate Professor and lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Dr Steve Wordu has attributed the Thursday’s killing of a final year student to the lack of synergy between security agencies especially the police and the internal security outfit of the Rivers State University (RSU).

It has been confirmed by both authorities of the Rivers State University and the state police command that a student was shot dead by some assailants on the RSU campus while first semester exams were going on.

While the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni had suspected the killers to be cultists, the school’s Public Relations Officer, Harcourt Whyte had maintained that security had been well beefed up on campus after the killing.

The UNIPORT lecturer who condemned the killing in strong terms said, the police should have known better that university security outfit is not armed enough hence, the need for the constant presence of the police on campus.

Wordu said, “university campuses have been fused into street life because of their location around towns and cities.

“So, the proliferation of guns and drugs that have been infiltrated into street lives have came into university campuses.

“The availability of these guns and drugs have made cultism tougher and deadly and university security outfit can not tackle it alone because the school’s security unit has limit as to arms bearing and enforcements.

“It is the effective and sufficient presence of the security agencies on campus that can deter violent crimes on campus.”
