NOA blames parents, clerics for electoral malpractices in Rivers state

Brave Dickson

As Nigeria intensifies its preparation towards the forthcoming general elections, the National Orientation Agency in Rivers State has identified the failure to teach morals by families and religious organizations as major causes of election violence and rigging in the country.

The State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Young Ayotamuno dropped the hint on Thursday at a parley with newsmen in Port Harcourt.

Barr Ayotamuno said, “it is important to look at the root causes of election violence and rigging before we can find lasting solutions to them.

“Our faith-based organizations and families have not done well in addressing these problems. Moral teaching is now missing among families and religious bodies.”

He also underscored the need why the agency had focused more of its sensitization campaign on the electorates, adding that, “the voters are the target of politicians and therefore need proper education on how to participate in the elections.

“If the voters are not properly enlightened, politicians tend to induce them into vote-buying and other forms of election malpractices.”

The NOA State Director further assured women of protection and urged them to fully participate in the forthcoming elections.

Barr Ayotamuno maintained that the agency under his watch has got full assurance from security agents that women’s rights will be protected during the elections.
