Why 90% in the 21,000 vacancies on poverty alleviation scheme by Governor Nyesom Wike has to come from Rivers state- Professor Kingdom Nwaenyi

There are so many challenges in Rivers state particularly in the area of unemployment.

Unemployment has led to so many social vices particularly in the area of crime like fraud, kidnapping, prostitution and so on.

In the area of fraud, the level of internet scam by youths in the Niger Delta is rising everyday, and when some of these youths are asked why they go into it, the first response they will give is unemployment.

When you ask the prostitutes why they dress up in the night and stand on the road looking for clients that will offer them money in exchange for sex, they will give you the same response like the fraudsters.

This simply means that the major problem affecting both the young and old people in the state aside from security is unemployment.

It was in this regard that the laudable effort by Gov. Nyesom Wike to provide 21 thousand vacancies to employ more people into the civil service would go a long way in alleviating the poverty in the state and drastically reduce the high rate of crime.

Apart from the crime aspect of it, there is also the mental depression which can lead to suicidal attempt. Most times when people are depressed as a result of frustration, they can go as far as committing suicide especially when they see their mates or friends doing well in life.

This is why it is very necessary that the state government focuses mainly on indigenes of the state when providing these employment in order to reduce the high rate of crime in Rivers state. It is also very important that other states government emulate this efforts by the Rivers state government so that there will be progress in the country’s workforce.
