The Rivers Women Unite for SIM (RWUS) has marked this year’s Father’s Day by honouring Governor Siminalayi Fubara and issuing a passionate appeal for the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.
Speaking during their thanksgiving Overflow Series themed “God is Neither Bound, Nor Confined by Time” Comrade Glory Sunday and Belema Oningiye, described Governor Fubara as “a father figure and symbol of resilience,” acknowledging his leadership despite the ongoing political impasse in the state.
The group, speaking on behalf of women across the state, expressed deep concern over what it described as the “continued suspension of democratic governance” and the crippling effects of prolonged political instability, which they said has left Rivers State in a state of paralysis.
“For over three months, emergency rule and political unrest have brought effective governance to a halt. Development has stalled, public services have dwindled, and economic activities have collapsed. Women, children, and youth the most vulnerable in our society are bearing the brunt.”
RWUS noted that while political disagreements may have triggered the crisis, the time has come for leaders to rise above personal interests and prioritize the wellbeing of Rivers people. The group specifically appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Fubara, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, to demonstrate true statesmanship and commit to reconciliation.

“This is not the time for rivalry, It is a time for responsibility, as the adage goes, when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.’ Today, women, children, and young people in Rivers State are the grass, bruised and battered under the weight of prolonged political conflict.”
RWUS also lamented the socioeconomic impact of the crisis, citing abandoned projects, business closures, rising unemployment, and growing despair among citizens. The group called on all political actors in the state to set aside differences and come together as brothers who share a sacred duty to uphold peace, progress, and unity.
They further urged President Tinubu to take decisive steps to ensure the restoration of democratic structures in Rivers State, describing his role as critical in healing the fractured political environment.
“We believe that through dialogue, humility, forgiveness, and a sincere commitment to the common good, Rivers State shall rise again,” the group affirmed. RWUS reiterated its commitment to peace, justice, and democratic values, vowing to continue advocating for sustainable development and reconciliation in the state.
