Ex-Super Eagles Coach Oliseh gets global recognition with IFAB role

Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has announced his appointment to the advisory panel of the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

IFAB is a global self-regulatory body for association football, responsible for defining the Laws of the Game—the official rules governing how football is played.

The 50-year-old former midfielder, who played for clubs such as Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus, revealed this in a statement posted on his X account (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

Oliseh, widely recognised as one of Africa’s finest midfielders, expressed enthusiasm about contributing to IFAB’s mission.

The former Genk player wrote, “Thrilled to announce my appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB)! IFAB is the global guardian of football’s laws, responsible for determining the laws of football and shaping the beautiful game for players and fans worldwide. Honoured to contribute to its mission!”

Oliseh, who began his coaching career in Belgium with youth teams in the Belgian Third Division club Verviers—most notably the Under-19 team, will now join his former Super Eagles teammate Daniel Amokachi, along with Arsène Wenger, Luís Figo, Ivan Vicelich, and others.

The advisory board consists of 21 members, including former footballers, past and present coaches, representatives from the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro), the European Club Association (ECA), as well as technical directors and experts from various confederations.

He also disclosed that he is working on a project aimed at sharing his expertise and contributing to a deeper understanding of the game and its operations.

“I can share this secret with you; I am currently working on a project that will allow me to share with you, the general public and my naturally preferred people from Naija, a forum that permits me to impact and share knowledge that helps people to have a better knowledge of the game and its affairs! Stay tuned soonest”, said Oliseh.
