RSUTH Hosts Free Hypertension Screening for Civil Servants, Residents

In commemoration of World Hypertension Day, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), in collaboration with the Hospitals Management Board and the Nigerian Cardiac Society, hosted a free hypertension medical outreach for civil servants and members of the public.

The programme, themed “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” was held at the Civil Servants Clinic, State Secretariat, with over 100 participants in attendance.

This was announced through their Facebook page, shared late Friday night.

World Hypertension Day is usually celebrated every 17 May.

The health initiative provided free blood pressure checks, electro-cardiograms (ECGs), cardiac consultations, and medications for participants.

According to RSUTH Chief Medical Director and National Secretary General of the Nigerian Cardiac Society, Prof. Chizindu Alikor, three to five out of every ten adults are hypertensive, with the majority remaining undiagnosed.

He explained that uncontrolled hypertension can lead to stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

The outreach, led by Dr. Mina Tele-Ikuru of the Civil Servants Clinic, featured a health talk by Dr. Rita Wakama of RSUTH on hypertension’s causes, risks, and prevention.

Dr. Vincent Nwachukwu of the Ministry of Health and Dr. Ishmael Jaja of the Hospitals Management Board supported the event, emphasizing the government’s focus on preventive care.

With strong attendance and positive feedback, the programme advanced heart health awareness and underscored the importance of regular checks and lifestyle changes.
