Rivers NUJ Urges Journalists to Prioritize Peace, Public Interest in Reporting

NUJ

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has called on journalists to report responsibly, with a focus on promoting peace and safeguarding the public interest.

This appeal was made by the State Chairman of NUJ, Rivers State Council, Comrade Paul Bazia-Nsaneh, during a courtesy visit by members of the League of Character Clubs International to the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre in Port Harcourt.

In a statement issued by the Council’s Secretary, Dr. Ijeoma Tubosia, Bazia-Nsaneh emphasized the importance of ethical journalism, urging media professionals to steer clear of sensationalism and ensure that their reports contribute to the unity and stability of the state.

“Journalists should exercise caution in the choice of words used in their reports. The NUJ Rivers State Council will do everything within its reach to ensure that peace reigns in the state.”

He stressed that the Union advocates for a media environment that fosters understanding and cooperation rather than division and conflict.

The President General of the League of Character Clubs International, Dr. Christian Kokoriko, commended the Bazia-Nsaneh-led executive for what he described as “good and quality leadership.”

He applauded the Council’s intervention in resolving issues involving the Police and some of its members, describing the action as a demonstration of the adage, “the pen is mightier than the sword.”

Dr. Kokoriko noted that character is essential for development and urged the NUJ leadership to remain positive and collaborative in its engagements.

He also used the opportunity to inform the Council of the League’s upcoming sports activities aimed at youth engagement. According to him, the finals of the Dr. Abiye Briggs Cup will hold on May 30, 2025. He extended invitations to all journalists and sports enthusiasts to attend.

In addition, he announced other scheduled sporting events, including the Late HRH Chief Dr. Pere Harold Dappa Biriye Soccer Cup competition for youth club sides in the South-South and South-East zones, the Senator Melford Obiene Okilo Wrestling Competition for secondary school students in Bayelsa State, and the Late HRM King Dr. Frank Eke Soccer Cup, honoring the former Deputy Governor of the old Rivers State—all set for May 30, 2025.

The visit was rounded off with the presentation of a Humanitarian Service Award to the NUJ Council and the decoration of the Chairman and his executive with character brooches.
