Suspended Rivers Chief of Staff Sues George Nweke, Channels TV for N2 Billion

The suspended Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Edison Ehie, has filed an N2 billion defamation lawsuit against the immediate past Head of Service of the state, George Nweke, and Channels Television.

Ehie is seeking damages before the Rivers State High Court, presided over by Justice Stephen Jumbo, over a televised broadcast aired by Channels Television on March 29, during which George Nweke allegedly made false, malicious, and defamatory statements against Ehie.

Represented by his counsel, Tuduru Edeh (SAN), Ehie is also asking the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, either directly or through their agents, privies, or representatives, from further publishing or circulating the said defamatory content.

The claimant further requested that the court compel the defendants to issue a public retraction of the statements, accompanied by a formal apology. The retraction and apology he submitted should be broadcast on Channels Television, another national TV network, and published in at least two newspapers with nationwide circulation.

In his ruling, Justice Stephen Jumbo granted the application and warned all parties against making further public comments on the matter pending the determination of the case.

The suit has been adjourned to June 4, 2025, for mention and further proceedings.
