Port Harcourt-based chef, Tico, is bringing a heartwarming initiative to the city this Friday, December 6, 2024. At Ohakwe Street, NTA Road, she plans to serve free meals to hundreds of residents, aiming to feed between 1,000 and 1,500 people—or even more, with a touch of divine intervention.
The inspiration for this generous act stems from a recent experience she shared. “Earlier today, I went to eat at a mama put with my husband,” Tico recounted. “I didn’t enjoy the experience at all. The stew was extremely salty—the kind of saltiness that could hurt someone’s mouth. I’ve been dealing with stomach pain all day because of it.”
This unfortunate encounter sparked an idea. “So many people are hungry and crave good food but can’t afford it because quality meals are expensive,” she explained. “I want to give people the authentic mama put experience—delicious, well-cooked, and healthy food that’s affordable for everyone.”
Determined to make a difference, Tico is preparing to serve dishes inspired by the classic buka stew, complete with all the sides and flavors one would expect from a traditional mama put. Her goal is to recreate the nostalgic experience of enjoying authentic street food, especially during these challenging economic times.

“Almost everyone is cutting corners now because of the tough economy,” Tico said. “I want people to enjoy the real mama put experience like it used to be back in the day. I’m a huge fan of Mama Put, and this is my way of giving back to Port Harcourt, a city that has shown us so much love.”
