Super Eagles Skipper Extends Stay, Eyes World Cup Glory

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has dismissed rumors of his retirement from international football, reaffirming his commitment to the national team.

The 31-year-old defender, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON campaign, scoring three goals and being named MVP, insists he still has much to offer.

“I think I am playing my best football in recent years,” Troost-Ekong said. “I still have some targets in sight—that will be the AFCON in 2025 and the World Cup in 2026.”

With Nigeria already securing their spot in the 2025 AFCON, Monday’s match against Rwanda serves as a valuable preparation ground for the upcoming challenges. The Super Eagles will face Rwanda again in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, making this encounter a crucial opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses.

“We are going to take the game very seriously,” Troost-Ekong stated. “It is also a way for us to prepare for next year, 2025 -everything that is going to be ahead, whether the AFCON or World Cup qualifiers.”

“We want to understand how they play, how we can set up against them. That can only come through trial and success or even trial and error, we will do that tomorrow.”

As Nigeria continues its journey toward the 2026 World Cup, Troost-Ekong’s leadership and experience will be invaluable assets. The team will need to navigate a challenging qualification process, and the lessons learned from the Rwanda match could prove crucial.
