“We Don’t Need Your Security; Election Must Hold,” Fubara Tells NPF

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has issued a strong warning to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) ahead of the upcoming local government elections, stating that the election must proceed without police involvement.

Recall that on October 5, the local government  election was scheduled to hold across the 23 LGA’s.

Governor Fubara made this statement while addressing journalists early Friday morning at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office in the state capital.

The governor had received information that the police planned to intervene by withdrawing officers from the RSIEC premises. In response, Governor Fubara expressed his disapproval of these actions.

“We came here this morning when we heard that the NPF is coming to take over the premises of RSIEC, and I have to come myself to find out why such a thing will happen. From what I heard, one DCP brought them here to withdraw the policemen that are already here, protecting this place, so that a new officer will take over this place.” he said.

Governor Fubara described a related court ruling as “fraudulent,” emphasizing that it did not prevent the election from taking place. He also questioned the relationship between the Inspector General of Police and his political opponent, suggesting that it lacked professionalism.

The governor made it clear that the state would provide its own security, as the police presence was not needed.

“We don’t need your security. We will provide our own security. After all it happened in Anambra, go away with your security, but this election must hold,”  he insisted.

Fubara reiterated that the RSIEC property belongs to the state, warning the police against any interference and asserting that the election would proceed as planned.

“This is my property, and you don’t have any power to stop me from entering it. Just try it, and part of your history as a very wicked and fraudulent Inspector General of Police will include shooting fubara.” he added.

Governor Fubara also assured the people of Rivers State that the election would be peaceful and urged everyone to remain calm.

“Let me say to all Rivers indigenes and residents residing in Rivers State that the election will hold. Anything that wants to happen let it happen. everybody just relax; nothing is happening. We are ready if this will be the last fight; I will take it to the end.”

During the press briefing, his supporters could be heard affirming his statements.
