Rivers youths not happy as police continue to occupy LG secretariats

By Mark Lenu

Some youths of Rivers State say they are not happy over the continued presence of the police in all the 23 LGAs of the state.

The youths said they expected the police to leave the premises of the secretariats since a court of appeal has dismissed the tenure elongation appeals of the immediate past elected local government chairmen.

Speaking on behalf of the youths, the former IYC chairman of the Kalabari clan, Sobrasua Odum told our correspondent that the police have no business occupying the council secretariats, adding that the Court of Appeal has resolved the issues that earlier brought tension on the secretariats.

On Monday, the Court of Appeal, sitting in Port Harcourt dismissed two appeals instituted by the sacked Local Government Chairmen loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike.

The appeals which were marked as CA/PH/137M/2024 and CA/PH/145M/2024, were filed by the former Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro LGA, Enyiada Cookey-Gam, and six others, challenging the decisions of the High Court regarding the elongation of their tenure.

While delivering its judgments, the court ruled that the appeals lacked merit and consequently struck them out.

The youth leader also urged President Bola Tinubu to tell the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to stop instigating crisis in the state.
