Rivers farmers beg Wike for grants as flood destroys crops

Farmers in Rivers State have begged Governor Nyesom Wike to give them grants, saying that the flood had destroyed all the crops they planted.

This year’s flood in Nigeria has been seen by many as the highest in decades as they compared it with the 2012 flood which they attributed to be lower.

A lot of farming and fishing communities in the state had been devastated by the flood in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Abua/Odual, Ahoada West and East and recently in Akuku-Toru respectively.

Pleading on behalf of the state farmers, the National President of Commercial Farmers and Agro-Allied Producers of Nigeria, Amadi Fidelis told our correspondent that what the farmers need from the government is a grant not a loan.

“We have lost all that we planted this year to flooding and we are begging our governor to please give us grant to enable us start planting again.

“This year’s flood came in a magnitude we have not seen for decades and crops worth hundreds of naira millions had been destroyed by the flood,” he said.

The farmers also predicted a steady increase in staple food prices such as yam, garri, etc, if nothing is done to help farmers go back to farm.

Report also has it that the flood had claimed a lot of lives across the country including Rivers State.
