Varsity Don disagrees as Zamfara govt directs residents to buy guns

Brave Dickson

An associate professor at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Steve Wordu has disagreed with the directives of Zamfara State; authorizing the residents of the state to buy guns against the attacks of bandits.

The Bello Matawalle
led state government had directed residents of the state to obtain guns to defend themselves against bandits’ invasion.

The government said the directive was necessary following the increase in the activities of bandits in various parts of the state.

The state Commissioner for Information, Brahim Magaji Dosara had in a statement revealed that the government had concluded arrangements to facilitate residents to acquire basic weapons.

Wordu told our correspondent that the people of Zamfara do not have the money to purchase the calibre of guns that can deter bandits.

“The earlier, state governors admit their failure to protect their state, the better.

“Telling the residents of Zamfara to buy guns for their defence will not solve the problem of insecurity.

“Such directives by the state government will lead to arms proliferation in the state which will lead to dis-fire and accidental discharge.”

He also urged the governor to recruit arms experts to fight the insecurity in the state and not to direct the state residents to buy arms for their own protection.
