A social analyst and director, rebuild Nigeria, Osteen Ejiasa has blamed the poor sanitary situation in Port Harcourt Metropolis on residents’ poor attitude towards sanitation and hygiene.
Ejiasa revealed this during an interview with our correspondent in Port Harcourt, adding that the Rivers state ministry of house and urban planning are not responsible in their job of ensuring the validity, capacity and topography of soil for a proposed construction site.
The social analyst blamed substandard water drilled from boreholes in the state on Rivers state government.
On his part, a lecturer at the department of environment, geology and hydrology, University of Port Harcourt, Mr Michael Kekwaru Menakiari, advised the Rivers state government to create a sanitary land field to act as a central collection refuse dump, in a bid to curb the attitude of indiscriminate dumping of refuse by residents.
He admonished citizens to ensure they carry out adequate soil tests of proposed construction sites before they embarking on any construction project.
