Southern governors meet in Enugu

17 Southern governors are currently meeting in Enugu state to discuss issues of national concern which include the controversial Anti-Open Grazing law expected of member states to enact.

This follows after their previous meetings in Asaba and Lagos States, where they had discussed the ban on open grazing.

The governors had urged all the states in the region to ensure that the legislation against open grazing of cattle is put in place on or before September 1.

The decision was reached after individual attempts to address the menace of open grazing in southern states failed as the governors in unison announced a ban on loose cattle rearing.

In a communique released after their meeting, they recommended that the Federal Government should support willing states to develop modern livestock management systems.

Governors, who arrived at the meeting in Enugu were received by the host Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at the government lodge.

The meeting which commenced at about 12:45 pm had 9 governors in attendance including governors of Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ondo, Osun State, and Ogun States respectively.

Also in attendance are deputy Governors of Cross Rivers, Abia, Ebonyi, Edo, Oyo, Ekiti, and Imo states.
