INEC to upgrade voting points in Rivers, first time in 25 years

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has kick-started the process of decongesting polling units in Rivers State to increase the number.

This was made known by the resident electoral commissioner in the state Obo Effanga during an interaction with journalists in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Effanga said the exercise, part of a nationwide effort, will cover more than three million registered voters in the state which is expected to increase after the forthcoming voter registration exercise.

Effanga, said the exercise will lead to the upgrading of 2,424 voting points out of the existing 4,442 polling units in Rivers State.

He said the electoral umpire will not site polling units in private compounds, religious compounds and stressed that units situated at private residences will be removed.

This is the first time in 25 years that the commission is making an attempt to increase the number of polling units in the country.
