Rivers community cries out over invasion by Fulani herdsmen

Rivers community has decried the invasion and destruction of farmlands by cattle herders leading to the destruction of crops and loses to farmers.

Mene Apere, the traditional ruler of Kaani in Khana Local Government Area who spoke to newsmen on Thursday in his place described the activities of the herdsmen in the area as a strange phenomenon to the people of Kaani community.

“My people are predominantly farmers and earn their daily living through farming. But recently, their major occupation is undergoing serious threats by herdsmen who let loose their cattle to destroy the crops of our farmers.

“This is totally strange and unacceptable and we cannot concede our means of livelihood to the strange herdsmen,” the monarch said.

He said he had made several complaints to security operatives in the area, but they did not pay serious attention to the issue, adding that some elements in the area collected money from the herders to allow them to have access to the farms.
