Wike flags of EU, UNICEF water sanitation project.

In continuation of the state-wide roll out of projects, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Wednesday flagged off the execution of Rivers State Government, European Union and United Nations Children’s Fund ( UNICEF) Water and Sanitation projects in two local government areas.

Performing the flag off at Nkoro town school in Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area, Governor Wike said that his administration is committed to the provision of potable water for rural dwellers.

The Governor who was represented by the State Commissioner for Water Resources, Professor Kaniye Ebeku, said that the water and sanitation projects will be implemented in benefiting communities.

He said: “The people of this local government area must take full ownership of these projects. That is why we are performing the flag off with the active participation of the people.

“The State Government is a multi-sector developer. This administration is active in the health sector, education sector, road infrastructure and special projects. The commitment is to improve the lives of the people”.

Governor Wike urged the benefiting communities to support and cooperate with the the implementers of the projects for early delivery.

He said that the projects will be delivered in nine months across the two benefiting Local Government Area.

It will be recalled that the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike released N200million in two tranches for water projects in the two local government areas.

In his remarks, Team Leader of the European Union Partners, Albert Acheten urged benefiting communities to play key roles in the maintenance of the projects when completed.

He said that the design of the scheme was demand driven, with communities playing active roles by making suggestions.

Caretaker Committee Chairman of Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area, Mr Boma Brown, said that the water projects will help improve the health of the people.

He lauded the Rivers State Governor for the sustained roll-out of projects since December last year.

National Authorising Officer, Opalebi Olarenwaju said the European Development Fund is committed to carrying out its oversight function to ensure the realisation of the projects.

The National Authorising Officer urged the contractors to work in line with the approved specifications to deliver the projects.
