NPFL: Enyimba gun down Rivers United in Aba

Enyimba Football Club has moved within one point of the top of Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL after sealing a 1-0 win over Rivers United in a re-scheduled NPFL fixture at the Enyimba Stadium on Thursday.

Enyimba dominated early on and nearly took the lead in deserved fashion when Mboama saw a fierce goal-bound drive kept out in brilliant fashion by the Rivera United goalkeeper, Ospino Egbe after he was played through by the lively Orok Gabriel in the ninth minute.

Victor Mbaoma fired in the only goal with a 24th-minute freekick to lift the eight-times champions above their neighbours.

United improved afterwards, especially in the second half but failed to create too much to threaten Theophilus Afelokahai who really didn’t really have much to do all game long.

Now one point behind leaders Plateau United, Enyimba will hope for the return of some of their regulars for Sunday’s trip to Dakkada FC.

Technical Manager of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma cut a forlorn figure afterwards as he was left to ponder what might have been.

“I am not happy about the game because this is a game we were not supposed to lose. We missed a lot of scoring chances and we had converted them, the result would have been different,” he said.

Rivers United who currently occupies 11th spot on the standings with nine points from six games will next meet Katsina United on Sunday in Port Harcourt
