The first post-independence president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has died at the age of 95.
Mugabe who was ousted in November 2017 in a military coup has been battling ill health and had been in hospital in Singapore since April.
He became Zimbabwe’s prime minister in 1980 after winning an election but abolished the office in 1987, becoming president instead.
Robert Mugabe was born on February 21, 1924 in then Rhodesia. As a freedom fighter, he was imprisoned for more than a decade without trial for his criticism of the then government of Rhodesia in 1964.
His successor, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, expressed his “utmost sadness”, calling Mr Mugabe “Zimbabwe’s founding father” and “an icon of liberation”.
