Death toll rises in Face off between SARS and Nkpolu Residents

The number of persons killed in the ongoing face-off between residents of Nkpolu in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers and personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, have risen to four, just as some residents say as much as six persons have been killed.

Theportcitynews gathered that scores were left with life-threatening injuries.

Tension in the area which has been under lockdown by security operatives for over three hours forced residents to flee while businesses were equally shut.

Some youths were alleged to have vandalised business premises during the burial procession of a 26-year-old Aleruchi Woko who was shot by a DSS officer attached to military convoy in November 2018.

A source said while security operatives intervened to stop the vandalization, gang members highjacked the procession leading to a shootout with the police.

He said that more than 20 persons were subsequently arrested as the crises escalated on Tuesday afternoon.

The Rivers Police Command’s spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, said that the situation is under control.
