No Democracy Day celebration in Rivers State

There was no event set out by the Rivers State Government to celebrate the newly declared democracy day.

Checks by theportcitynews did not reveal any activity by the state government.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2018 recognised June 12 as the nation’s democracy day in Memory of MKO Abiola.

This was followed by a review of the constitution to give it a legal backing.

However, many states including Rivers did not put a show for the day.

Moshood Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12 presidential election was deprived of his victory after the then military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida annulled the results.

Abiola was detained by the former dictator, Sani Abacha allegedly poisoned in prison in 1998.
