Ahead of the March 9 gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections in Rivers State, indigenes of Ogu in Ogu-Bolo local government area have taken to the streets of the town to protest harassment of residents by personnel of the Nigerian Army.

Theportcitynews gathered that a youth leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who also doubled as special assistant to a house of assembly representative in the area, Evans Bipi, was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning by soldiers.

The protesters who displayed different placards called on the military to cease the harassment of residents in the area.

The angry residents who spoke to Theportcitynews accused local politicians of inviting soldiers to perfect the harassment.

They also warned that the actions of the soldiers might lead to a bigger crisis.

The Rivers State Government, on Wednesday, raised an alarm over plots to arrest some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state.

The party said that the military is colluding with the minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi to perpetuate violence so that the gubernatorial election in the state can be postponed.
