Breaking: Two, including a policeman killed during a robbery attack in Port Harcourt

Armed robbers shot and killed a Mobile Police Officer on escort duty on Monday.

Witnesses said the gunmen had trailed the company vehicle the Mobile Police Officer was escorting from a bank where they had gone to withdrew an undisclosed amount of money.

A witness, who craved anonymity, said as soon as the company vehicle arrived Garrison, the gunmen barricaded it and shot severally at the Mobile Police Officer, thus killing him on the spot.

The witness said the armed robbers made straight to the vehicle’s boot and took away the money.

He said that the driver of the vehicle as well as one other person suspected to be a company staff sustained bullet injuries and were taken to hospital.

“The incident happened in the afternoon. The vehicle the Police Officer was escorting was at Garrison when another vehicle barricaded it. Two men came out from the vehicle and made straight to where the Police Officer was sitting and opened fire on him.

“They shot him severally and the man died on the spot. They went to the boot of the vehicle and carried the money. The driver and one other person in the vehicle sustained bullet injuries and were taken to hospital,” the witness stated.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident.

Omoni said the deceased was on escort duty when the incident happened.

He said the injured driver and the other person in the vehicle were evacuated to hospital for treatment.
