Brave Dickson

Following rumours of discrimination against the wearing of hijab in schools and workplaces in Rivers State, the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter FOMWAN has said it would go tough on anyone who intimidates Muslim sisters because of hijab.

The association maintained that wearing of the hijab is a commandment by Allah and no person, institution or farm should dare to discourage the wearing of hijab.

According to the state Amirah of the association, Hajjah Memunat Bello, “we have dealt decisively with some institutions in some states who attempt to punish our Muslim sisters because of hijab and Rivers State cannot be left out.

“If we notice such, we will petition the national assembly, and also approach the court when necessary.

“Let me use this medium to warn anyone or institution in this state not to contemplate any move to discourage our Muslim sisters from adorning hijab because we will not take it lightly”

The state Amirah of FOMWAN, therefore, advised all female Muslims in the state to stand firm and defend their religious right to wear hijab at all times adding that the association is committed to standing for them always.

Recent past has shown the tough stands of Muslims over discrimination against the wearing of the hijab.

On Monday, November 19, 2018, the International School, University of Ibadan in the South West region of the country was reportedly shut down over a controversy surrounding the wearing of hijab.

A statement posted on the main gate of the school said the school had been shut down till further notice.

The statement, signed by the authority of the school, advised parents and guardians to take note of the closure.

“Notice: The International School, University of Ibadan has been closed down until further notice. Please, take note,” the statement read.
