The Commissioner of Public Complaints Commission, PCC, in Rivers State, Honourable Marshall Isreal, has called on the National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA, to send relief materials to flood-ravaged areas in Rivers State.
Isreal expressed great shock at the extent the ravaging flood wrecked some areas of the State, especially the Ahoada, Onelga and Obio/Akpor axis of the State.
He further called on NEMA to intervene by sending relief materials to victims of the sad incident.
According to the Commissioner, most persons have been rendered homeless, businesses have been closed down and Communities sacked.
“Most of these communities are now an eyesore and in dire need of relief from the government, cooperate Organizations, NGOs and Religious institutions to ensure speedy re-integration of the victims into the society.
“I have visited some affected areas in Ahoada, Onelga and Obio/Akpor to assess the level of damage done by the ravaging flood and I can tell you the sight is pathetic.
Theprtcitynews reported that the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, only donated four canopies to the victims of flooding in Ahoada West.
Theportcitynews also reported that the safe for NGOs, churches and oil companies, both the state and federal governments have abandoned victims of flood in the state.
Marshal Isreal noted that “Some communities have been completely sacked and the inhabitants rendered homeless.”
“The East-West road axis of Nkpolu, down to Rumuagholu in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area has been completely cut off from the rest of the City.
“Shop owners have been forced to abandon their shops with goods worth millions of Naira as they have been overtaken by flood.”
“While I call on Rivers State government to do something about the drainage system in Port Harcourt and its environs and conduct proper Environmental Impact Assessment before embarking on any project, it’s expedient to note that people who are affected by the flood are experiencing insufferable pains.
“They need foods, clothing, shelter and drugs and this is where we need the swift intervention of NEMA and other relevant government agencies”
The PCC Commissioner further assured the victims of the flood of the Commision’s willingness and readiness to engage the relevant authorities, agencies and cooperate Organizations towards bringing relief to them.
