A Dutch energy company, Energy Ventures B.V., is working on a project to convert gas currently being flared in Rivers State into electricity and cooking gas.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Okibe, disclosed this during an inspection of the project site at Agbada 2 in Igwuruta, near Port Harcourt, and a visit to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED).
Okibe said the project would harness about five million standard cubic feet of gas currently flared daily in the area and convert it into electricity or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for communities around the project.
According to him, the Agbada project is being developed by Africa Gas Technology Company Limited, the Nigerian subsidiary of Energy Ventures, and will serve as a pilot for similar projects in Nigeria and other gas-flaring regions.
Okibe said gas had been flared in the area for more than 60 years, contributing to environmental pollution and health concerns.

“What we are doing is a small step to correct that,” he said.
He said the project would cost tens of millions of dollars and is being funded through a combination of private and public-sector financing.
The company has completed its Environmental Impact Assessment and obtained regulatory approval from relevant authorities.
Okibe said preliminary work, including fencing of the project site, had started, while full construction would begin after the necessary construction permit is obtained.
He added that the company’s meeting with PHED had received approval to engage the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on the permit required to distribute the electricity generated from the project.
