Lionel Messi has been named in Argentina’s squad for the October international break, despite announcing his retirement from international football last month.
The 39-year-old forward is expected to make his farewell appearance for the national team when Argentina take on Benin Republic at the Estadio Mâs Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The fixture is set to give Argentine supporters an opportunity to celebrate their captain and bid him farewell on home soil as he prepares to bring his international career to an end.

Messi’s most recent competitive appearance for Argentina came on July 19, when La Albiceleste faced Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Argentina suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain, missing out on the opportunity to retain the World Cup. Messi finished the tournament with eight goals.
The upcoming encounter with the Benin Republic is therefore expected to mark a special moment, with the Inter Miami star set to make one final appearance in front of his home fans.
