Igboukwu Honours Ezeobi, Wife with Nze Nà Ọzọ Titles

There was a colourful display of Igbo culture and tradition at Ezịhu Village, Igboukwu Ancient Kingdom, in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, as Dr. Obinna Joseph Ezeobi and his wife, Professor Ezeobi, were formally inducted into the Nze Nà Ọzọ traditional institution.

The ceremony, held at Dr. Ezeobi’s country home in Ezịhu, attracted members of the Nze Nà Ọzọ traditional institution from across Igboukwu and beyond, as well as dignitaries from various walks of life.

Dr. Ezeobi was conferred with the title Nze Eze Ịfeakọnaobi Nà Igboukwu, while his wife received the title Lolo Ugegbe Oyịbo.

Following the completion of the required initiation rites and oath-taking, the couple were formally crowned by the paramount head of the Nze Nà Ọzọ institution, the Onye-Ịsị-Nze, Nze Umeọkpalaugo Ezeakọnaobi Atakaagbọọ, who is also the Chairman of Nze Nà Ọzọ Igboukwu.

Speaking with The Port City News, Nze Umeọkpalaugo explained that the ceremony was organised to formally confirm and witness Dr. Ezeobi’s admission into the Nze Nà Ọzọ institution of Igboukwu.

He noted that Ezịhu is one of the nine Nze Nà Ọzọ sectors in Igboukwu designated for the initiation of title holders, adding that candidates are expected to be hardworking and reputable members of the community with no record of questionable character.

According to him, the Nze title occupies an important position in Igbo society, as it is traditionally associated with individuals who have distinguished themselves through good character, achievement and service to their community.

He said the presence of the title holders in their full traditional regalia underscored the cultural significance of the occasion, describing the Nze Nà Ọzọ institution as one that recognises distinguished individuals and places them among the respected elite of Igboukwu Ancient Kingdom.

Also speaking, the Onye-Ịsị-Nze Ebeọzọ Igboukwu Kingdom, Nze Ezeifesinachi Ezeanieche Umeoduche, said the ceremony demonstrated the continued relevance of Igbo culture and traditional institutions.

He stated that Dr. Ezeobi had completed the necessary requirements for the initiation and that the gathering was for the confirmation and coronation of the new title holders.

He congratulated Dr. Ezeobi and his wife, noting that they would henceforth be recognised within the traditional institution as Nze Eze Ịfeakọnaobi and Lolo Ugegbe Oyịbo of Igboukwu.

In his acceptance speech, Nze Dr. Obinna Ezeobi, speaking on behalf of his wife, expressed appreciation for the honour and pledged to uphold the rules, norms and regulations governing the Nze Nà Ọzọ traditional institution.

“Today is a great day, not only in my life but also in the history of my family. As a member of Nze Nà Ọzọ Igboukwu, I will maintain the rules and regulations governing the Nze Nà Ọzọ traditional institution,” he said.

As part of the traditional obligations accompanying his new title, Nze Eze Ịfeakọnaobi performed his first official duty by greeting the Nze Nà Ọzọ title holders according to the prescribed traditional protocol. The ceremony included the mandatory three-handshake greeting, known as Ịnara Akanatọ, during which he acknowledged the names of the titled members present.

The cultural high point of the ceremony was the majestic Nze Nà Ọzọ initiation dance performed by the newly inducted title holder, followed by a collective dance involving members of the Nze Nà Ọzọ and Ndị-Lolo institutions.

The ceremony was attended by prominent personalities, community leaders, academics and political figures, including Chief Ifeanyi Ezeịfe and Chief Nathan Egba, a two-time former Commissioner for Information in Bayelsa State, alongside other former commissioners, serving and former legislators, and past and present President-Generals of Igboukwu Kingdom.

The gathering ultimately served as both a celebration of the Ezeobi family and a vibrant demonstration of the enduring place of Igbo culture, tradition and traditional institutions in contemporary society.
