Why You Should Eat More Fish: Health Benefits You Should Know

For many people, meat is a favourite source of animal protein. In Nigerian markets, it is not uncommon to see longer queues at meat stalls than at fish sellers.

But while both meat and fish provide valuable nutrients and protein, fish has some important health advantages, particularly when it comes to the type of fat it contains.

So, should you consider putting more fish on your plate? Let’s take a closer look.

Fish vs. Meat: What Makes Fish Different?

One of the major nutritional differences between fish and many types of meat is their fat content.

Fatty meats can contain significant amounts of saturated fat, and eating too much saturated fat over time can contribute to increased LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, which is associated with a higher risk of heart disease.

Fish, particularly oily fish, provides omega-3 fatty acids, which are important nutrients for the heart, brain and overall health.

This doesn’t mean you need to completely stop eating meat. Instead, replacing some meat meals with fish can be a simple way to add more nutrient-rich foods to your diet.

Fish May Support Heart Health

Fish is well known for its omega-3 content, especially varieties such as sardines, mackerel, tuna and herring.

Research has linked regular fish consumption with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 fatty acids may help:

  • Reduce triglyceride levels
  • Support healthy blood pressure
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Support normal heart rhythm
  • Help maintain overall cardiovascular health

Some studies have also found lower rates of coronary heart disease among people who regularly consume fish.

Good for the Brain

The omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in fish play important roles in brain function.

DHA, in particular, is an important structural component of the brain and eyes.

Including fish as part of a balanced diet can therefore contribute to overall brain health.

A Great Source of Protein

Fish provides high-quality protein containing essential amino acids needed for:

  • Muscle development and repair
  • Maintaining body tissues
  • Supporting the immune system
  • Producing enzymes and hormones

It can be an excellent alternative to meat when you want a protein-rich meal without relying on red or processed meat every day.

Oily Fish Are Especially Rich in Omega-3

Not all fish contain the same amount of omega-3. Oily fish generally provide the highest amounts.

Good options include:

  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Herring
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Anchovies

These fish can be particularly useful for people looking to increase their intake of EPA and DHA.

What About Fish Oil Supplements?

Fish oil supplements contain omega-3 fatty acids, but getting nutrients directly from fish also provides protein and other important nutrients.

For most people, eating fish as part of a balanced diet is preferable to relying solely on supplements.

If you rarely eat fish, however, you can discuss whether an omega-3 supplement is appropriate for you with a qualified healthcare professional.

How Often Should You Eat Fish?

For most healthy adults, dietary guidelines commonly recommend eating fish at least twice a week, particularly varieties that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

You don’t necessarily have to choose between fish and meat entirely. A healthier approach may simply be to eat fish more often while reducing excessive consumption of fatty or processed meats.

A Word About Safety

Fish is nutritious, but some species can contain higher levels of mercury and other contaminants. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and young children should pay particular attention to advice on choosing lower-mercury fish.

Also, how you prepare your fish matters. Grilling, baking, steaming or boiling can be healthier options than frequent deep-frying.

So, Should You Eat More Fish?

Absolutely, if you enjoy fish, adding it more regularly to your meals can be a healthy choice.

Fish provides quality protein, essential nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids that can support heart and brain health.

You don’t have to completely abandon meat. Just consider making fish a more regular part of your diet.

Next time you’re at the market, why not pick up some fish and give your health something extra to smile about?
