The Rivers Peace Initiative has welcomed the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill by Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara before the Rivers State House of Assembly, describing it as a significant return to constitutional governance after years of political tension in the state.
In a statement by its convener, Mr. Obinna Ebogidi stated that the development goes beyond the mere submission of a budget, signalling renewed engagement between the Executive and Legislative arms in line with democratic principles.
The group maintained that the interest of Rivers people must always take precedence over political differences.
“Today’s event demonstrates that dialogue remains possible and that democratic institutions can still function within the framework of the Constitution,” the group stated.
“The pathway to lasting peace lies in engagement rather than confrontation.”
The Rivers Peace Initiative cautioned against viewing the budget presentation as the end of the reconciliation process.
It described the move as the beginning of a new phase of governance anchored on cooperation, mutual respect, and commitment to the welfare of the people.
The group urged both the Executive and the Legislature to sustain the momentum by ensuring the 2026 Budget receives transparent, objective, and timely consideration in the overall interest of Rivers people.
It further called for strict adherence to fiscal responsibility, transparency, and prudent management of public resources during implementation, stressing that the people of Rivers State will ultimately judge the renewed relationship by tangible outcomes in service delivery, accelerated development, and improved living standards.
The Rivers Peace Initiative emphasised that peace becomes truly meaningful when it delivers visible benefits to citizens and appealed to all political actors, public institutions, and stakeholders to build on this positive development by prioritising the peace, stability, and progress of Rivers State above every other consideration.
