- Labels Claims Narrative Fabrication
The Presidency has rejected recent allegations made by Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant Peter Obi, who claimed the federal government is deliberately targeting his businesses and compromising his personal safety ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a sharp rebuttal, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Obi’s assertions as completely groundless, misleading, and an attempt to manipulate public emotions.
The development follows an interview in which Obi expressed fears for his survival, alleging that the administration was actively frustrating his commercial endeavours and causing social associates to distance themselves from him for fear of state retribution.
He also cited a recent airport incident where his vehicle was locked by officials as proof of targeted state interference.
Responding to the allegations, Onanuga dismissed the narrative, asserting that Obi is seeking to blame the administration for ordinary personal inconveniences.
Regarding the airport incident, the presidential spokesman noted that the enforcement action was likely the direct consequence of violating standard airport parking regulations rather than any coordinated political harassment.
Onanuga further maintained that Obi’s claims of an existential threat or a state-sponsored boycott of his social invitations are entirely fabricated pieces of political propaganda.
According to Onanuga, these narratives are designed to garner unwarranted public sympathy while deflecting focus away from Obi’s own credibility challenges and the internal friction within his political platform, the NDC.
To counter the claims of economic victimisation, Onanuga pointed out that Fidelity Bank, a financial institution in which Obi holds a significant interest, continues to operate successfully and expand, benefiting directly from the ongoing economic adjustments introduced by the current administration.
Onanuga stressed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains occupied with implementing vital economic and social reforms for the country.
He stated that it will not be derailed by unsubstantiated rhetoric from opposition figures.
