Democracy Day: “Our Generation Must Secure Prosperity”— Tinubu Promises

President Bola Tinubu has marked the 2026 Democracy Day with a solemn promise to translate Nigeria’s democratic freedoms into tangible economic prosperity.

He declared that true civil rule must be felt directly in the pockets and lives of the citizenry.

In a nationwide address to commemorate the historic June 12 milestone on Friday, the President stated that while previous generations fought for independence and democratic governance, the primary task of the current generation is to achieve widespread economic security.

Tinubu emphasised that democratic governance cannot be considered successful if it does not positively impact the daily realities of the populace.

He insisted that the true measurement of freedom lies in the quality of life enjoyed by ordinary Nigerians, specifically through expanded opportunities for the youth, increased productivity for farmers, growth for entrepreneurs, and preserved dignity for workers.

Linking his economic policies to the national holiday, the President re-affirmed that his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is explicitly structured to ensure that the dividends of governance are distributed equitably across all strata of society.

“The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity.”

Reflecting on the country’s democratic trajectory, the President recalled that nearly three decades ago, internal and external observers doubted Nigeria’s democratic survival due to its complex ethnic and cultural diversity.

However, he noted that this very diversity has become the foundational strength sustaining the nation’s stability.

Acknowledging the current socio-economic challenges facing the federation, Tinubu praised the historic resilience of the Nigerian spirit.

He stated that historical milestones like June 12 prove that the citizens possess the inner strength to navigate difficult national transitions.

“The road ahead is steep. But June 12 reminds us: Nigerians do not break. We bend, we bleed, but we do not break.”

The President urged all citizens to consciously reject internal divisions, political cynicism, and despair, calling instead for a collective embrace of unity, national confidence, and hope.

He envisioned a country bound by a singular purpose where judicial justice is accessible to all, personal liberties are fully protected, and commercial opportunities remain abundant.

Tinubu called on both leaders and citizens to renew their democratic covenant to ensure that the monumental sacrifices made by past national heroes are preserved, praying for the continuous progress and divine blessing of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
