Bayelsa NAWOJ Prioritises Capacity Building, Strategic Partnerships

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Bayelsa State Chapter is poised towards promoting capacity building and strategic partnerships which will promote professionalism among female journalists and advocate for the rights of women, children, and other marginalized groups within the state.

This declaration was made by the new re-elected President of the association, Mrs Grace Orumieyefa, at the unveiling of the new executive at the Triennial Conference of NAWOJ Bayelsa chapter organized in Yenagoa at Ernest Ikoli Press Centre.

In her acceptance speech, Mrs Orumieyefa thanked members of the chapter for giving her another mandate and added that she would leverage on the gains already made before.

She stressed the importance of building the capacity of members and forging strategic partnerships with others that would promote professionalism.

Mrs Orumieyefa assured members of the chapter that there would be increased advocacy for the rights of women, children, and other marginalized groups such as persons living with disabilities.

Previously, the Vice President of NAWOJ Zone F, Mrs. Stella Macaulay, who performed the inauguration, had praised the chapter as among the most peaceful and united chapters in the South-South Zone. She advised members to continue maintaining their spirit of collaboration and keep advocating for the participation of women in governance.

Other elected executive council members inaugurated include Mrs. Blessing Agadaga-Oti as Vice Chairperson, Mrs. Eyal Ikisikpo-Banabo as Secretary, Mrs. Deintei Otavie-Ugiri as Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Patience Nicks-Osuoto as Treasurer and Mrs. Peregborobofa Angese-Engonanabo as Financial Secretary.

In addition to this, Dr. John Angese, the Secretary of Zone F South-South of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bayelsa State Council, complimented the chapter on its professionalism and perseverance. He particularly noted that their programmes were commendable and supportive in their efforts towards promoting journalism.

Dr. Angese also praised the peaceful and transparent process through which the elections had taken place, emphasizing that these were among the key components for developing professional organizations.

The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by a lawyer, Mrs. Diseye Egberipou, who urged the new executives to be diligent and accountable in fulfilling their mandates.
